The United States leads the world in chicken production. Over 9 billion meat chickens are processed each year and another 300 million are used to produce eggs. The vast majority (over 90%) of these animals are raised in deplorable conditions, pumped full of antibiotics to keep them alive, and slaughtered inhumanely.
It's easy to see that livestock have happier and healthier lives when raised in a more natural setting and not in a crowded, dirty confinement barn. Did you know it's also healthier for the consumer?
The modern poultry industry produces birds that perform well in those production models. To use alternative ethical models of production we need different types of birds.
